Radnor Township has been notified by the Delaware County Health Department that one of the mosquito traps set by the Mosquito Borne Disease Control Program in Radnor Township, at Encke Park, tested positive for West Nile Virus.
This simply means that some number of mosquitoes that were captured in the trap were carrying the virus. This does not mean that a person tested positive.
Currently, this does not indicate widespread public health risk but serves as an important reminder to take precautions against mosquito bites. The Township is working closely with county and state health agencies to monitor the situation.
The Radnor Township Parks Maintenance Division will continue implementing routine mosquito management practices to remove standing water collected in parks, on tarps, containers, etc.
Residents can also take 3 easy steps to protect themselves.
- Drain Water: Remove standing or stagnant water from flowerpots, buckets, and gutters weekly. Be mindful of birdbaths and children’s toys that hold water for more than 4 days.
- Cover Up: Wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes, especially around dawn and dusk.
- Use Repellent: Apply EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping keep our community safe. We will continue to monitor the situation and communicate with residents if further information becomes available.
