School Crossing Guard

General Description

This is a part time seasonal position in the Police Department. The employee is responsible for the safe movement of children to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections for the Radnor Township Police Department. The work requires some independent judgment. Assignments are received from the Supervisor of Parking and Auxiliary Services in the form of general outlines of desired results and the employee is expected to develop methods and routines for the completion of assigned tasks.

Essential Job Functions

Oversee the safety of children while traveling to and from school including but not limited to instructing children at designated school crossings to wait at the curb until a safe crossing of the roadway can be achieved; directing traffic in the immediate vicinity of the crossing; stopping vehicular traffic, guiding children across the street and signaling vehicular traffic to resume normal flow.

Responsible to report traffic violations to police, report suspicious persons in the vicinity of intersections or school areas.

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: A High School Diploma is desired. Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.

Must pass a criminal background investigation, child abuse clearance and pre-employment physical including a drug test.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities -

Ability to communicate clearly and maintain an effective working relationship with the public.

Must have ability to successfully complete annual training related to position.

The physical demands of this position must be met by an employee in order to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.

This is outdoor work requiring employee to withstand all weather elements including heat, rain, snow, sleet and ice. Must have the ability to stand for 4-6 hours in a day, must also be able to bend, stoop, squat, reach above shoulder level, kneel, lift and carry and walk. Ability to use both right and left hands and fingers for grasping, repetitive motions and fine manipulation. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus and protect children from potential hazards. Ability to talk, hear and walk without assistance. Ability to report to work and perform required duties five days a week for a minimum of four (4) hours per day.
