PARKS AND RECREATION INTERNSHIP
The Radnor Township Recreation & Community Programming Department is currently seeking qualified applicants for an internship position.  This internship opportunity is available for individuals working towards a degree in Sport and Recreation Management, Parks and Recreation Management, Business Management, Education or a related field. Student interns will have the opportunity to work closely within a local government parks and recreation department gaining valuable work experience in recreation administration, facility management, and park management.  Radnor Township provides a great experience for students interested in the field of parks and recreation management, operations, and services.  Please visit www.radnor.com to learn more about the Department.

Parks and Recreation Internship Description 

Job Title/Summary: Recreation & Community Programming Department - Parks & Recreation Internship 
The internship experience in the Radnor Township Recreation & Community Programming Department is reserved for qualified individuals working towards a degree (Master's or Bachelor's) in sports and recreation management, parks and recreation management, business management, education, public administration or a related field of study.  Radnor Township provides a great experience for students to gain the necessary applied knowledge and experiences that will lend to a successful career! 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities/Experiences/Not limited to the Following:
 
  • Gain knowledge and practical experience working in a local government parks and recreation office under professional supervision.
  • Develop skills working with people and the public in an office and public environment by learning daily operations and building customer service skills. 
  • Increase familiarity with the routine procedures and responsibilities of a community parks & recreation department and its processes.
  • Observe and practice a variety of administrative tasks such as providing the community with requested information, processing program registrations and payments, processing facility and park usage requests, marketing program and event information, implementing department organization of paperwork and information, and analyzing finances.
  • Work with community sports organizations to disseminate information to the public and administrate operations.
  • Establish and maintain relations with local organizations and groups to promote community recreation activities and events.
  • Acquire information and understanding related to recreation facility operations and scheduling.
  • Acquire hands-on assistance with the phases of seasonal recreation and events including the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs, activities and excursions.
  • Develop an understanding of the working relationship between the department and its community volunteers, seasonal staff and instructors, part-time staff, and contracted service providers.
  • Create marketing materials such as publications and flyers.
  • Attend and supervise programs and events.
  • Attend/chaperone seasonal sponsored events.
  • Conduct program needs assessments; organize, and distribute program equipment and supplies.
  • Conduct research relative to the parks and recreation field that can advance Department future operations and development.
  • Execute a variety of special projects and that can enhance objectives and operations.
  • Address program and community concerns while expanding problem solving skills, attention to detail, resourcefulness, and sound judgment with professional guidance. 
  • Expand written and verbal communication skills necessary for a professional workplace.
  • Establish goals for professional development.
 
Work Schedule: Hours are flexible based on class schedule; Evening/Weekend hours may be necessary during special events.
 
Minimum Qualifications:  We prefer the candidate to be enrolled in a Master's or Bachelor's Program and working towards a degree. Candidate must be self-motivated and committed to the profession.  Candidate must have a valid Driver's License, excellent interpersonal, written and computer skills, preferably with Microsoft Office Software Programs.  Certification in First-Aid/CPR/AED is preferred.  Background checks are required.

SUMMER CAMP 2016 INTERNSHIP

  • Develop an understanding of the working relationship between the Recreation and Community Programming Department and the camp program, staff members, campers, and parents.  
  • Develop skills working with the public in a hands-on environment by learning daily operations and building customer service skills. 
  • Work within camp groups and fulfill roles of leadership and supervision of campers as needed.
  • Communicate with camper parents/guardians regarding general camper needs or general inquiries.
  • Develop familiarity with the routine procedures and responsibilities of a community parks & recreation department summer camp and its daily processes and administration.
  • Acquire information and understanding related to recreation summer camp operations and daily scheduling.
  • Acquire hands-on assistance with the phases of weekly planning for trip, special events, and activities.
  • Gain leadership in administering daily camp operations.
  • Perform administrative duties such as developing camper organizational rosters; monitoring camper daily transportation needs or changes; documenting camper activities.  
  • Conduct program needs assessments; manage and distribute program equipment and supplies.
  • Expand problem solving skills, attention to detail, resourcefulness, and sound judgment with professional guidance. 
  • Expand written and verbal communication skills with projects such as the creation of the weekly camp newsletter and communicating program information with staff members.
  • Establish goals for professional development.
 
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday within 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM time frame with flexibility based on class schedule.
